Heritage, Honored. From Japan to Sonoma.

HERITAGE IN EVERY BOTTLE.

In honor of AANHPI Heritage Month, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the roots behind Adonna Wines and the generations that continue to shape its story.

Founder and Vintner Donna Kato’s heritage is one of both craft and cultivation, carried through two distinct family lineages. On her father’s side, her great-grandfather was a peach farmer. His connection to the land – seasonal, patient, and enduring – forms the foundation of Donna’s own relationship with viticulture today.

On her mother’s side lives a different but equally profound tradition of artistry. The image below captures Donna as a girl with her siblings and mother, alongside her grandfather, a Japanese calligraphy (shodō) artist and teacher. In it, he is preparing sumi ink, a practice rooted in discipline, precision, and quiet expression, qualities her mother instilled in Donna and her siblings throughout their childhoods.

The calligraphy shown reads:

有思古人 翆月 (Suigetsu)

An older phrase that loosely translates to:

“Thoughts of those who came before us.”

More than a translation, it reflects a philosophy. One of remembrance, respect, and carrying forward what matters.

Together, these influences, land and artistry, shape the spirit of Adonna Wines. Each bottle is not only an expression of place, but of heritage, intention, and continuity.
